2nd Summer School

“Foundations of Liberal Democracy”

22. - 27. August 2011.

COK announces 2nd Summer School “Foundations of Liberal Democracy” The main objective of COK’s summer school is to offer students a coherent vision for a free and democratic society. We believe that institutions (political parties, media, parliament etc.) alone are no guarantee for a well-ordered society.

Citizens must take responsibility themselves for the common good. Croatia has made significant progress since gaining independence. Joining NATO was a historic achievement. However, major deficits remain regarding rule of law and a functioning market economy. There is a trend towards procedural democracy, i.e. the basic form is fulfilled with necessary institutions, elections etc., but in reality the general public is losing confidence in the political establishment.

Teaching the next generation how to live in a free society and encouraging them to participate is critical. Civil society must become more active and COK sees its contribution precisely in this area. We have no political party affiliation. We have participants from Croatia and neighbouring countries. The faculty includes eminent experts and people with practical experience at the highest levels of government.

Our goal is to continue working with students on a regular basis and maintain a steady dynamic in the years ahead.
